Report reveals increasing popularity of jump racing

Improved tracks and facilities have helped boost attendances at jump race meetings by 42% between 2001 and 2005, according to “Jump Racing Focus” a report commissioned by the Racecourse Holdings Trust, a subsidiary of the Jockey Club, with backing from the British Horseracing Board and the Horserace Betting Levy Board.

From 2001 to 2005, the average attendance at jump meetings went up from 3,8 to 4,4 thousand, while the average attendance at flat meetings dropped from 5 to 4,6 thousand.

Other data revealed by the report:

  • Employment in the racing industry amounts to 88,000 people.
  • Sponsorship of jump races amounted to UK£23 million in 2005
  • Jump racing accounting for 40 per cent of the bookmaking industry's total annual British turnover of £4bn and 75% in winter months.
