Betting firms brought to court for sports betting

The French tennis federation, organisors of the French Open (Roland Garos) tennis tournament filed suit at the courts of Paris and Liege (Belgium) against online betting companies Betfair, Bwin and Ladbrokes.

The tournament organiser wants to prevent that betting companies take bets on their tennis matches to avoid match fixing. The tennis federation also claims that the betting companies are making money on its tournament without any compensation.

Press reports reveal that for a smaller tennis event in Paris last year, betting turnover was estimated to be between US$750 million and US$1.5 billion.
