Now unbeaten in over a year, Wise Dan began his string of successes in the 2012 Fourstardave. He gained this year’s victory by a length and a quarter under top weight, conceding 11lb and more to his rivals.

On the west coast of America, GAME ON DUDE (USA) [126] gained his sixth victory in a row when crushing his rivals by 8.5 lengths in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar. The six-year-old is now the highest rated horse in the world both on dirt and on an artificial surface.

NOVELLIST (IRE) [128] continues to be the top rated horse in Europe on the strength of his 5 length defeat of TRADING LEATHER (IRE) [120] in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by Betfair) (G1) at Ascot. The German-trained colt did not need to reproduce his very best form to record his third successive Group 1 victory in the LONGINES Grosser Preis von Baden (G1).

Although BLACK CAVIAR (AUS) [130] is now enjoying her well-earned retirement, there have been several top class performances by fillies and mares since the previous edition of the Rankings.

THE FUGUE (GB) [123] has shown marked improvement this season, and she followed up her dominant 4 length victory in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks (G1) with a game success in the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes (G1) at Leopardstown, where she defeated AL KAZEEM (GB) [124] by a length and a quarter, in the process putting up her best performance yet.

Having already captured the Larc Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) for the third successive year, MOONLIGHT CLOUD (GB) [122] returned to Deauville just one week later to complete a rapid double in the Prix Du Haras De Fresnay-le-buffard Jacques Le Marois (G1). Having quickened clear of her rivals 200m out, Moonlight Cloud held on bravely from OLYMPIC GLORY (IRE) [124], with INTELLO (GER) [120] third and DECLARATION OF WAR (USA) [123] fourth.

Declaration of War subsequently showed improved form when stepping back up in distance to take the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) at York, where Trading Leather chased him home.

In Australia, ATLANTIC JEWEL (AUS) [122] burst back onto the scene with a facile success in the New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (G1) at Caulfield. Despite having been off the track for 16 months, Atlantic Jewel strode impressively clear of her rivals before being eased down to win by two and a quarter lengths, confirming that she is at least as good as ever.

ROYAL DELTA (USA) [121], North America’s highest rated mare of the year so far, also registered another very smooth success, following up her 10.75 length stroll in the Delaware Handicap (G1) with a four and a half length victory in the Personal Ensign Handicap (G1) at Saratoga, shouldering top weight in both events.
