German states discuss new gambling law

Meeting on 13 December, the 16 leaders of the German federal states postponed the decision on a proposal for law that would ban all online gaming in Germany. Already three German states, Bavaria, Saxony and Hesse, have introduced their own ban, while court rulings in various other states have confirmed, at least until a new law is introduced, the exisiting gambling restrictions.

According to an earlier Supreme Court ruling, the federal states have until the end of 2007 to come up with a new law. This law could confirm the federal gambling monopolies under the condition that they aim to meet certain public policy goals, such as consumer protection.
